are probably many things going through your mind right now, especially if this is your first baby. Baby care can be intimidating but anyone who’s done it will tell you that older infants are easier to take care of than a newborn baby.

The biggest reason for this is that newborns are so much smaller and sensitive and they have specific needs which they cannot express, other than crying. The parent or caregiver of an infant has to try to determine what these cries mean.

Studies have shown that one of the possible contributing factors to post-natal depression is the difficulty of baby care. Whether experienced or a first time parent, each baby is different and can come with different challenges of care.

There are however, some tips you can use to make it easier for you to care for a newborn. The more you know about newborns and baby care, the better prepared you will be when you find yourself in this situation.

Here are some newborn baby care tips:

• A baby’s skin can become dry, flaky and “shed” in the first few weeks- bathing and moisturizer will help this grow in naturally
• The scalp will often shed as well and sometimes needs help getting the outer layer of dead skin cells off- sometimes this is referred to as “cradle cap”
• Mild rashes are normal in new babies- avoid harsh creams or ointments and let it clear up on its own
• You cannot “spoil” a newborn by holding him too much or picking him up when he cries
• After the first couple of weeks, it’s perfectly ok to take your baby outside of the house (unless your doctor has told you something different in the case of your baby)
• Umbilical cord stump care is important- touching it won’t hurt your baby and it doesn’t hurt when it comes off (it’s just dead cells)
• Follow your doctor’s instructions for care of umbilical cord stump, circumcision surgery sites and other sensitive areas of your newborn
• Have a safe place for your newborn to sleep

With these tips, you can get past the worries and the wives’ tales and get to the truth about newborn baby care. If you have any questions or concerns, you should always address them with your baby’s pediatrician. Don’t feel bad for asking too many questions- that’s what the doctors and nurses are there for.
